Would you like to look refreshed and youthful without surgery? You can, thanks to innovative non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures like facial fat transfer. Facial fat transfer has become a popular facial rejuvenation technique, because it is safe and long lasting. But how does facial fat transfer work.
Facial fat transfer
Facial fat transfer also known as fat grafting is a procedure in which fat cells are taken from other parts of the body, typically the abdomen, flanks or thighs, and used to rejuvenate the face.
How does facial fat transfer work?
The fat cells are harvested using a special liposuction technique, and are processed before being injected into the targeted areas of the face. The cells must be carefully extracted in order to improve the chances of survival when they are transferred.
The fat cells take time to adapt to the new location and establish a blood supply. However, as soon as a blood supply is established, the transferred fat will last for the long-term, and provide ongoing facial rejuvenation. Anywhere from 30- 70% of the harvested fat will survive.
Facial fat transfer is very safe, because it uses the patient’s own fat, so the body recognizes it as its own, and there is therefore less chance of an allergic reaction.
The goal of facial fat transfer should be to have patients look as natural as possible rather than overdone. This means injecting just the right amount of fat.
What to expect
There is generally some swelling after facial fat transfer and this typically takes about 1 week to resolve. When the swelling goes down the face will be noticeably smoother and fuller (click here to learn more).
