What is EpiLase?
EpiLase also known as Epi-LASIK, is an advanced vision correction procedure that is used to treat refractive eye errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
EpiLase is a surface procedure in which an instrument known as an epi-keratome is used to separatea thin delicate layer of cells on the cornea, which is lifted to the side. The laser is then used to treat the eye,and the sheet of cells is moved back into place afterwards. A bandage contact lens is placed over the eyes for a few days to promote healing.
Are you a candidate for EpiLase?
If you desire laser correction and have a thin cornea you may be a good candidate for EpiLase. The corneal flap createdwith EpiLase ismuch thinner than the flap made with LASIK, and this makes the procedure suitable for patients with thin corneas who would otherwise not be good candidates for LASIK.
EpiLase is also recommended for patients that have moderate to severe dry eyes, because the corneal nerves are not damaged during the procedure.
That said, you should consult with an experienced ophthalmic surgeon to determine your EpiLase candidacy.
