There has been a lot of talk about Kybella since it was approved last year for treating under chin fat. Kybella is an attractive alternative to surgery, as it is minimally invasive, relatively painless, and produces permanent results as the fat does not return once it has been melted away. But are there side effects that can be caused by Kybella treatments?
Kybella Treatment
Kybella or deoxycholic acid is an injectable treatment for submental fat, or fullness under the chin. It has not been approved by the FDA for use outside of this area. Kybella treatment normally consists of a series of 4 to 6 sessions, which are usually spaced about 4 weeks apart.
Results
Patients are generally very satisfied with the improved appearance of their chin and profile after Kybella. Final results can take anywhere from 3 to 5 months.
Are There Side Effects
In order to achieve optimal outcome, Kybella must be administered using the correct number of injections, and needle placement. The injector’s skill can therefore help to reduce post-injection complications. However, there may be some side-effects related to treatment.
Bruising, pain, and swelling at the injection site, are the main side-effects patients notice after Kybella treatment. Doctors generally recommend that patients stop taking any inflammatory drugs at least 2 weeks prior to treatment, in order to minimize bruising. There may also be numbness, itching, hardness, and redness.
During clinical studies conducted using Kybella prior to approval, some adverse reactions were noted. These include difficulty swallowing, neck pain, nerve injury, and discoloration at the injection site.
