Is Botox Safe?

Botox is one of the most sought after non-invasive cosmetic treatments around the globe.  However, botox is derived from the bacterium that causes botulism, which is a type of food poisoning.  As a result, people often wonder – Is botox safe?

Is Botox Safe?

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin and has proven to be safe when injected in very small doses to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles.  Botox is also used to treat medical conditions such as excessive sweating, migraines, and muscle spasticity, without any adverse effects.

Who Can Administer Botox?

When it comes to the safety of botox, it’s also important to consider who is administering the injections.   Botox treatment must only be performed by a qualified medical practitioner because when injections are done by unqualified people, serious complications can occur.  Therefore botox is safe, as long as it’s done by an experienced, qualified injector.   Patients should also verify the qualifications of the provider, and ask how long they have been doing cosmetic injections.

However, as with any type of cosmetic treatment, there are potential side-effects associated with the use of botox, even when it is administered safely.  Patients should therefore ask their practitioner about these side-effects before undergoing treatment.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox works by blocking chemical signals from the nerves to the muscles.  This stops the muscles from contracting and causes wrinkles to relax and soften.  The effects of Botox generally last 3-6 months, and muscle movement gradually returns during that time.
