Is Dysport like Botox?

When it comes to wrinkle-relaxing treatments, botox cosmetic is certainly the gold standard.  However, botox alternatives like dysport are becoming increasingly popular.  But is dysport like botox.

Is dysport like botox?

Dysport is very similar to botox because it contains the same active ingredient – botulinum toxin type A, and it also reduces the appearance of dynamic wrinkles.  Dynamic wrinkles develop as a result of the contraction of the facial muscles and include forehead lines, crow’s feet, and furrows between the brows.

Like botox, dysport is an injectable neurotoxin, so when injected it temporarily prevents the contraction of the muscles in the treated area.  As a result, wrinkles soften over time, resulting in a refreshed, rejuvenated look.  Botox and dysport are minimally invasive treatments and require no downtime.

Other similarities between dysport and botox:

  • Effectiveness

Dysport and botox are equally effective for reducing dynamic wrinkles, and there is generally no difference in the final results seen.  Most people start to see the effects of dysport about 2-3 days after treatment, while with botox it can take 2-7 days.

  • Duration

The beneficial effects of dysport typically last 3-4 months, which is a similar time-line to botox.  The effects of dysport and botox wear off about the same time, but individual results will vary.

  • Cost

Botox is somewhat more expensive than dysport.  However, since it takes more units of dysport to achieve the same results as botox, the final cost often ends up being comparable.
