Is Laser Hair Removal Really Permanent?

If you need to get rid of unwanted body hair, laser hair removal is a cost-effective, time-saving option.  Laser hair removal is an innovative procedure that uses pulses of laser energy to eliminate unwanted hair, and the results are considered permanent.  But is laser hair removal really permanent?

Is laser hair removal really permanent?

Laser hair removal can last a long time, but it’s not permanent, because all the hair follicles are not destroyed during treatment.  Laser hair removal significantly reduces the volume and density of hair in the treated areas and minimizes hair growth, so it can more accurately be described as laser hair reduction.

The hair follicles remain inactive for several months after laser hair removal and when the hair does regrow, it’s usually finer in texture and lighter in color.   Studies have shown that many patients achieve hair reduction of up to 85%, after undergoing the required number of laser hair removal sessions.

How laser hair removal works

The laser light selectively targets the melanin (pigment), located at the base of the hair follicle.  As the light is absorbed, the heat generated destroys or damages the follicle.

Multiple laser hair removal treatments are needed to see optimal results, because hair grows in phases, and the laser energy can only treat hair when it’s in the active growth phase.  It’s therefore impossible to treat all the hair in one session.

The underarms, bikini area, face, and legs are among the most common areas treated during laser hair removal.
