Is Latisse safe?

If you have short, thin eyelashes and have always dreamed of them being thicker and gorgeous, that dream is now possible thanks to Latisse. Latisse is a prescription treatment manufactured by Allergan Cosmetics that can make your lashes fuller and more luscious. It is an ophthalmic solution that can give you longer, lusher lashes, but is Latisse safe for your eyes.

How Latisse works
Latisse is applied to the base of the upper eyelids, using a sterile applicator brush. Medical experts are not sure why Latisse causes eyelashes to sprout, but after about 4 weeks there is a noticeable thickening and lengthening of the lashes.

Is Latisse Safe?
The FDA considers Latisse a very safe and effective product, but patients are advised to adhere to relevant safety guidelines. The active ingredient in Latisse is a prostaglandin analog, which is the same ingredient found in the glaucoma drug Lumigan. In fact, Latisse came about because doctors found that the patients being treated with Lumigan for glaucoma started experiencing longer, thicker eyelashes.

Common side-effects of Latisse include itchiness and redness of the eyes, along with darkening of the eyelid skin. These side-effects usually clear within a few days. Darkening of the iris is the most adverse event associated with the use of Latisse, and it cannot be reversed.

Individuals interested in using Latisse should pay keen attention to the safety precautions advertised by the manufacturer. It is recommended that you see a doctor before using Latisse, in order to determine if you have any of the risk factors that could lead to undesired effects.
