What Can Botox® Treat?

When it comes to non-invasive cosmetic treatments, Botox Cosmetic is the market leader.  Since being approved for cosmetic use in 2002, Botox has gained worldwide popularity as a facial rejuvenation treatment.  Each year millions of men and women across the world get Botox to improve their facial appearance.  But what can Botox treat?

What Is Botox Cosmetic?

Botox Cosmetic (botulinum toxin type A) is an injectable neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.   Botox works by relaxing the muscles to smooth the appearance of wrinkles.

What Can Botox Treat?

Botox treats dynamic wrinkles, which are expression lines that form as a result of muscle contractions.  Dynamic wrinkles develop due to the repeated facial movements related to expressions such as smiling, squinting, and frowning.  Common dynamic wrinkles include frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.

Frown lines, also known as glabellar lines or forehead furrows, are the wrinkles most often treated with Botox.  These wrinkles tend to give the face an angry look, so it’s not surprising that people often want to relax the muscles in this area.

What Is Botox Treatment Like?

It only takes around 10 minutes to administer Botox injections.  During treatment, botulinum toxin is injected into the underlying facial muscle of the area being targeted.

When Botox is injected, it blocks the release of certain chemical messengers that cause the muscle to contract.  This temporarily reduces the movement of the muscle, leading to a noticeable reduction in the appearance of the overlying wrinkles.

Botox is often combined with soft tissue fillers that treat other lines and wrinkles, to achieve longer-lasting facial rejuvenation.

There is no downtime after Botox, so patients can resume regular activities after treatment.

How Soon Will You See Results?

The results of Botox take around 24-48 hours to appear, so it’s normal not to see anything different immediately after treatment.  When Botox kicks in fully, patients will notice a dramatic reduction in frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.

How Long Do The Results Last?

The results of Botox last 3-4 months, and since the effects are temporary, patients will have to get treatment two to three times a year to maintain the results.  As soon as Botox wears off, the wrinkles will reappear.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox is a safe treatment that has been thoroughly tested and has a very safe history.  However, as with any drug, there are risks associated with the use of Botox.  Patients should be sure to discuss these with their provider before deciding on treatment.

Are You A Good Candidate For Botox Treatment?

If you have moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines, or crow’s feet that you would like treated, you may be a suitable candidate for Botox.

Candidates for Botox should be healthy and not have any underlying health issues such as neurological disease.  Botox is also not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Getting Natural-Looking Results With Botox

Botox results should be subtle and look smooth and natural, therefore, people should not be able to tell that you’ve had anything done to your face.

Getting natural-looking results with Botox requires a customized treatment plan in which problem areas are accurately diagnosed.  The dosage of Botox used  must also be tailored to fit the specific needs of the patient.  That’s why it is crucial to consult with a licensed, trained medical professional with significant experience administering Botox.

Botox is the ideal solution for dynamic wrinkles in the upper half of the face.  It is an excellent wrinkle-reduction treatment for men and women looking to smooth out wrinkles on the forehead or around the eyes.
