What can I do to get rid of varicose veins?

Varicose veins may not always cause discomfort, but they can be unsightly. That’s why people with varicose veins often want to know how to get rid of them.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that generally appear on the legs. They are usually dark blue or purple in color, and are visible beneath the skin.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins are caused by a build-up of pressure in the veins, due to the pooling of blood.  Veins have one-way valves that prevent blood from flowing backward, but if the valves become damaged, blood flows backward and collects in the veins, causing them to stretch.  These enlarged, twisted veins are known as varicose veins.

What can I do to get rid of varicose veins?

Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for varicose veins.  It is a minimally invasive procedure in which a sclerosing solution is injected into the damaged vein, causing it to collapse and close.  The treated vein is eventually absorbed by the body over the following weeks.

Is sclerotherapy painful?

Patients will feel some discomfort when the sclerosing solution is injected into the veins.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of sessions required can range from 1-5, depending on the severity of the veins being treated.

Is there any downtime

There is typically no downtime after sclerotherapy, so patients are usually able to return to normal activities immediately.  However, strenuous exercise should be avoided for 3-5 days after treatment.
