What is the Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

When it comes to non-invasive anti-aging procedures, botox is certainly the front-runner, but dermal fillers are not far behind. Botox and fillers are cosmetic injectables that can reduce wrinkles and give the face a youthful look.

What is the Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Botox and dermal fillers are excellent anti-aging treatments but they work very differently.

Botox

Botox is a neuromodulator.  It is a wrinkle-relaxing injection that is derived from botulinum toxin type A.  Botox smooths lines across the forehead, at the corner of the eyes, and between the brows.  These are known as dynamic wrinkles that develop over time due to the repeated contraction of the underlying muscles.

When injected beneath the skin the active ingredient in botox blocks the release of neurotransmitters from the nerves, which limits muscle contraction. The relaxation of the muscles softens the appearance of dynamic wrinkles.

Dermal Fillers

Unlike botox that smooths the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles, dermal fillers reduce wrinkles and creases by restoring natural volume to the skin.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) based fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are the most commonly used dermal fillers in the US.   HA is naturally produced by the body and helps the skin remain plump and elastic.  However, production of HA  gradually decreases with age, resulting in a decline in facial volume and skin elasticity.

When HA fillers are injected into the skin they attract water and this keeps the skin plump and hydrated. Results from HA fillers last 6-12 months depending on the specific formulation.

HA fillers are very versatile. They can be used to add volume to the cheeks and temples, plump the lips, and soften the appearance of lines and creases such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and lip lines.
