Laser hair removal has taken the world by storm, as it has become a sought-after cosmetic treatment. The procedure is fast, effective, and requires virtually no downtime. But some clinics refer to the procedure as hair reduction. So what is the difference between laser hair removal and laser hair reduction.
Laser hair removal
Laser hair removal is essentially a procedure that is done to reduce the number of hairs on the body. However, this cannot be accomplished in one go, because hair grows at varying rates, and involves 3 phases – growth, transitional, and resting, but the laser is able to affect it only when it is in the anagen or growth phase. As a result, it generally takes 4-6 treatments to achieve optimal hair removal, but there will be some hair reduction after each session.
How it works
The laser aims a concentrated beam of light at the hair follicle, and the energy is absorbed by the pigment in the follicle. The heat produced destroys the hair follicle, and this prevents any regrowth.
What’s the difference between laser hair removal and laser hair reduction?
Laser hair removal and laser hair reduction are really one and the same. Some doctors call the procedure laser hair reduction, because some patients have unrealistic expectations of having all their hair removed. However, as we have seen, that cannot be guaranteed because of the hair growth cycle, but most patients experience about 85% reduction in hair after treatment.
Once the anticipated hair reduction has been achieved, follow-up treatment can be done about every 2 years.
